Brothers feet are still of concern… when he was released from the VA hospital, the VA allowed for a home healthcare nurse to come three times a week to care for the open wounds on his big toes…

 

Brother is diabetic.

 

He was released from the VA hospital twice with these open wounds on his toes. (he was in the hospital for his mental illness) The first time he was released from the VA hospital with the wounds, he had to spend six weeks in a private hospital with a picc line to his heart to overcome the infection to the bone the wounds had caused. The wounds healed up under the private hospital’s care, only for them to open up again one week later after he went back into the VA Hospital’s care for his mental illness … Crazy!

 

Presently, One toe wound healed and closed. That’s good news! The right toe wound, however, still looks the same as it did when he left the hospital four weeks ago… We went to his VA primary care doctor and saw the nurse practitioner instead… He recommended we call podiatry to make an appointment… So I called podiatry… They said they couldn’t help him because it’s an open wound and that I should call wound care… That is when I texted his caseworker … she said she would call wound care to get an appointment… They gave her the runaround so now we have an appointment with PAVE - Prevention Amputation Veterans Everywhere at the VA Hospital that let this happen in the first place … all of the above mentioned caregivers are in the VA system (except the outsourced home health care nurse which is paid for by the VA)

 

Is it just me or does it seem like we can’t seem to get the help we need to close up the wounds that the hospital let happen and ignored in the first place? That the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing? Or in this case the right foot …

 

More insanity …
